bold to the point of being arrogant but you are also
being playful so she eats it up.
The key here is to be cocky AND funny. too cocky without
the funny and you are just an insecure jerk. Just
funny and you are a goofball. Be cocky AND funny.
Also, don't back off the 'cocky' if she calls you on it
with a "oh, heh heh... just joking". You gotta STAY
cocky.
EXAMPLE:
You: whoa. nice shoes. what are you, like four feet tall without them?
Her: (giggling) you are such an asshole.
you: thanks, glad you like it.
Negs are more subtle. With these you pay her a sincere
(or so it appears) compliment but you know that it is
not 100% true, so she has to correct you and - in doing
so - she lowers her status (and therefore you gain
status). These are trickier in some ways because they
must be done very nonchalantly to be effective.
EXAMPLE:
you: (acting sincere) hey, nice purse - is that a 'Louis Vuitton'?
her: (flattered, embarrassed) oh, thanks, no actually its not, it's a
(whatever)
you: (acting somewhat disappointed) oh... well... it's nice anyway....
That's my take on the distinction between the two, building off of what I've
heard from the 'experts' in the community.
