I already used the following email on a chick, and it worked:

Listen, I totally understand. You probably forgot to pay your phone bill, so
the phone company cut off the service. I figure you're probably emailing me
from the public library.

Don't be ashamed, you should have just told me. I would have come over and
brought you some ramen noodles or something to help you out.
