One word - OUCH. I've often wondered, if the ubiquitisnouss of canned openers
would eventually lead to their becoming known and stale like pickup linessuch
as "do you come here often?" This is one reason why I am so against canned,
scripted, verbatim openers, patterns, etc. By all means, use them as a
template, but by repeating them over and over again, in a small social circle
such as you seem to have, you are inviting trouble.
Although, really, you didn't need to have it neg you out so much. If something
isn't working, CHANGE it. For HB7 above, C&F/indirect wasn't working, she knew
your game. Why let that neg you out? Turn it around, go direct, like this:
HB7: (interrupting) Who do I
think cheats more, men or
women?
Me: at a loss for words HB7: You approached my sister
the other day...you need to
get some new pickup
lines...they dont
work...bla...bla...bla
Icedub: HAHAHAHA, no friggin' way, that was your sister!? That is hilarious.
I guess I'm busted, huh? (smiling) HB7: Yes/no/whatever
Icedub: (leaning in now, cheshire cat grin, cocky as fuck)hmmmm... so let me
ask, if my "pickup lines" don't work, why did they make such a big impression
on your sister that a) she had to go and tell her sister about it, and b) her
sister she told actually remembers it, days later? Do you always tend to
remember things that "don't work" so vividly?
