Every time someone posts an article, it may go through an entirely different
"path" to get to you.

Check out the "Path" line in any Usenet message, and you can see all the
places it had to go to get to you.

For example, here are all the servers your message got passed through to get
to me.

news.onramp.net!
newshost.cyberramp.net!
www.nntp.primenet.com!
nntp.primenet.com!
mr.net!
news.idt.net!
news.bbnplanet.com!
cam-news-hub1.bbnplanet.com!
howland.erols.net!
news.sprintlink.net!
news-peer.sprintlink.net!
news.wwa.com!
news.ucdavis.edu!

Reading from bottom to top, you can see your message start at ucdavis.edu.
Then it went to wwa.com, then it hit the big pipeline at sprintlink, then it
was passed down the line through 8 other servers before it finally ended up at
my ISP, Onramp.Net.

Each one of these servers has a different "speed," depending on how much
traffic it gets, how clear the connection was between it and the next server
down the line, the weather in peoria, etc.

Some days, a message might get lucky and only go through 3 or 4 different
servers to get to you. Other days, it may get routed to 8 or 9.

It all depends on server traffic (the number of posts trying to get passed
along through a server), connection quality, etc.

It's really hard to predict, so don't tear your hair out over it.

It may be your server has to go through some extra "steps" than these other
people.

The only real solution is to find another ISP. .Edu accounts in particular
can be slow, since the University computers they operate on tend to be busy
with lots of other processes, and they don't get into the "main stream" of
things as fast as commercial services.

My provider, Onramp, is just a few hops from Sprintlink (one of the major
Internet pipelines), so my messages are pretty fast.

I know this is a lot more info than you probably wanted, but if you want to
learn more, there's all kinds of info about this online.

Hope this helps.
