Yes, skilled SSers improvise as they go along, one of the most important
skills is to be flexible if your not getting the response you want. The
main purpose of the patterns is as examples for you to study so you can
learn to use process language as a natural part of how you speak. There
are some patterns that I have memorized simply because they speak to a
universal need that women have (like the Incredible Connection pattern),
or because they are awesome examples of languaging, where each word jus
flows into the next (like the Blammo). But for the most part, its best
to make it up as you go along, utilizing elements of whats happening
around you.
If you ever worked a sales job, you know that most first time salesmen
are given scripts of what to say to customers, with the customer's
responses and the saleman's counter-responses mapped out in detail. And
while a script might work sometimes to make a sale, the best salemen are
those who have made the sales script language a natural part of who they
are. The scripts are intended as learning tools. Same thing with patterns.

Try a audio recorder.

If you can afford it, go for it.
