Wax On, Wax Off
by Jay Valens of The Art of the Pickup
November 23rd, 2006

Listen up karate kid, I’ve got a nugget of wisdom for you today.

I’m sure you’ve run across thousands of pieces of advice on picking up women and a lot of it might be certain things to say, routines to follow, methods to learn. Heck, we’ve been giving you plenty and enough to keep you busy for months. I’m sure all the guys with our DVDs now are the busiest of all!

Anyway, you may find something that sounds awesome when you read it or looks awesome when you see it, but for some reason it doesn’t work right away. Or you might not realize it’s not meant to execute flawlessly.

In fact, the purpose of much advice you do get is meant to be for practice because true skill comes from practice and experience.

You are like Danielson from “Karate Kid” asked to wax the car in circular motions, first with your left hand, then with your right, over and over and over… and you might not be sure why or see any practicality in it…

…until you’re in a situation where you need to act or react and then it’s “Show me… wax on. Show me… wax off. Show me… paint up.”

You see, what you are doing when you’re out there trying this stuff isn’t just to get results from trying but at the same time building a near-instinctual feel for reacting to situations dynamically.

We are humans. We are not robotic and so there is no situation out there which can be perfectly planned. Nobody can possibly give you the right thing to say or do to every possible scenario that could ever happen to you, only generalities to prepare you for the most common.

The knowledge which you find or are given, the words, lines, routines, all that stuff, no matter how specific and seemingly genius, are pretty much ALL just examples. You can only get so far treating such examples as perfect gospel.

Instead, realize that it’s pretty much all “wax on, wax off”. Sometimes fun & interesting, sometimes tedious. But ALL necessary to get through and get the practice in so that when you’re confronted with a dynamic situation (which will happen most of the time in life), you WILL be prepared.

Think of something amazing you heard about a guy doing recently and heard it in the form of advice or as a tip. Maybe you read it somewhere. Maybe you watched it on a video. Maybe you even saw someone do it in front of you. You though “Wow, I have to try that.”

Ultimately, what you have to realize is that every bit of great advice, every great idea or tip, all of it had to originate somewhere.

There was a time that advice was not known and some guy out there ran into a scenario that caused him to react in a certain way, say a certain thing, and it allowed him to successfully progress towards his goal.

Nobody gave THAT guy the advice ahead of time, he come up with it all by himself. But most likely not because he’s a super-genius or talented beyond average human ability, but because for whatever reason he’d become accustomed to reacting to dynamic situations in ways that help him progress. Maybe he even repeated the same routine 100 times before coming up with his little gem.

The point is - you could be HIM. He could be YOU. What sets you apart is the practice. Then when you do find gems, or even come up with them on your own, you will be able to understand WHY they work and when to you use them, and have even more tools in your toolbox to practice with. Your understanding grows but, MORE IMPORTANTLY, so does your experience and your ability to think on your feet… even if one of your legs is broke and you’ve got to stand on one leg like a crane to give a challenging situation the can o’ whoop ass it deserves.

Your own personal Mr Miyagi,

Jay Valens
