"Reading"

What this is not about:

There are different types of reading a person:
First of all we have the pick-up classic: Cold Reading (“Cold readers commonly employ high probability guesses about the subject, quickly picking up on signals from their subjects as to whether their guesses are in the right direction or not, and then emphasizing and reinforcing any chance connections the subjects acknowledge while quickly moving on from missed guesses.”)
Cold Readings are always quite general so as to apply to most people. There are enough examples floating around on the forum for those who are interested in this stuff.

Secondly, we have hot reading which means that you have previous knowledge about someone and use it (without them knowing about it).

The third kind of reading is warm reading which means that you use Barnum Statements. Those are “statements that seem personal, yet apply to many people”.

Look at the Wikipedia page on Cold Reading or read Ian Rowland’s The full facts of Cold reading if you are interested.

The kind of reading that I want to talk about is no trick or general statement. It is spontaneous and tailored for each person.

Some examples:

Recently a girl asked me what my major was. I gave her an answer and she told me her major. (boring but the good stuff is about to come)
It was social sciences. She continued to tell me that she works in addition to studying but doesn’t really want to stay in her job forever.

THEN I asked her why she wants to quit her job as a kindergarten teacher.
What followed my question wasn’t an answer, but her jaw dropping, blood rushing to her face and her giving me the DDB look (“How could you possibly know?”- You should have a followed up on this.). (very powerful)

Another example:

In a club I winged for a friend and just vibed with the obstacle while he gamed his target.
I don’t really remember the conversation, but somehow she told me that she works in a bank (job talk – boring) and then I told her which bank in which city she’s working for. Same results.

Another one from college: I saw a girl next to me handing in a summary which was just about as long as the original text. After fluffing with her I told her that I’m sure that she’s the kind of girl who when reading a text highlights almost everything. Again, same results.

What did I do?
Well, I just took some low risk, fun anyways if wrong, educated guesses based on a piece of information that she gave me. If you are in the moment and a quick thinker it isn’t that difficult. It doesn’t matter if you get some wrong because it just opens another conversational topic and it is entertaining when they ask you why you thought that they were construction workers. So it’s a win-win situation for you and for them. I urge you to use them, but be careful who you are using them on. The effect can be extremely POWERFUL. Some girls (weird) get scared of you because you know so much about them (in this case you need to calibrate your response) and others fall in love with you on the spot, which can cause trouble if you aren’t interested in them or they are basket cases.

Like with every other powerful weapon act wisely concerning its use.
