There are few among us that can pervay the mechanics of escalation .. and even less who understand the concept of intensity while not appearing tense.

I was learning a song on the piano and realized that one good analogy of escalating intensity can be displayed by the progression of the notes in that song ..

First there was a pattern of notes that centered around the melody ...

this pattern gets repeated as the bass notes progress upward in tone .. escalating the melody with it although the melody didn't actually change ... I play the same keys as before but because of the associated increase in tone of the bass line it took the whole song up a notch ...

Adaptation to Seduction ...

lets make a pattern ...

$$$$$$$$$$$$

I saw the cutest little kitten the other day ... it was all fluffy and playful and jumping up and down ... and I played with it with this string a found and I was dragging it across the floor and she would jump and hiss .. oh it was fun ...

$$$$$$$$$$$$

now .. the pattern is in the visuals from the story .. what you visualize from hearing the story will elicit a feeling inside you ..

Now lets escalate ..

$$$$$$$$$$$$

So I took the kitten home with me showed it to my one year old nephew .. he sure is a cute little monster .. doesn't listen to anyone and damn if he doesn't break everything he gets his hands on ... well .. I was playing with the kittel and he walked by with his shoe laces untied and the kitten jumped up and dug her claws into his little leg ... oh my god ... you should have heard the screams ..

$$$$$$$$$$$$

see how it escalates ? same kitten story but with escalated circumstances .. and now things are more out of control ..

$$$$$$$$$$$$

So he bolts for the door .. kitten holding on with everything she's got .. and he makes it next door where they are building a new house and he runs up the plank and out on the unfinished deck just as I catch up to them ... I can see they are both terrified and so I toss out the string .. (what ? it's all I had) .. and I get the kitten to let go of my nephew's leg and chase the string ... but then my nephew slips and starts to fall so I toss the string off the deck and leap to catch him ...

boy ... I bearly made the catch ... he could have gotten hurt real bad ...

$$$$$$$$$$$$

then change the subject ... !

now think about the progression ...

good feelings about little kittens ...

fond memories of past experiences ...

then it moves to an escalation and possible dangerous situations which unfold with the story getting out of control and then when the danger factor gets escalated to the height of intensity it does ..

Then the danger gets unleashed ... things happen quickly and focus gets set on saving the nephew and the kitten gets excluded ... even though its the kitten who is the most danger.

Of course this is an example (that I have used in the field) but in various forms this same structure has provided a stepping stone to increased intensity and deeper levels of rapport in many of my interactions ..
