I tend to calibrate based off the opener. Generally, all I do is say "hi," and
then pause. Usually, I get a return hi and in that case depending on the
tonality I will wait for her to engage me. This approach places her in a frame
wherein she's pursuing all of a sudden.
With the girl I mentioned previously, I got a positive vibe from her and I
didn't really have to do too much.
If I get a negative response, then I go right to C+F.
My view on using an opinion-opener or "indirect" is that you're making an
excuse for talking to the girl. Why excuse yourself? Just take action.
